Derk waited for the waitress to leave. He needed a moment to compose his thoughts. Jules had thrown him into a tailspin and he had trouble all along to try and communicate with her about his feelings.

She wasn’t someone you could just have as a fuck buddy and leave her. No, this woman deserved a man who wanted commitment. He was lonely and alone. Jules did something to him he’d never felt before even with Kellie. He reached over and touched her hand. “Jules, I’ve wanted to talk to you. I’ve tried calling multiple times and you didn’t answer?”

“I was busy.”

“I gathered that, maybe with Sam?” He pointed to the children who were laughing at the fish in the tanks.

“Yeah, something like that.” Jules shyly smiled.

He couldn’t believe this was the same woman he’d talked to nearly every day for the past ten years. This person wasn’t the woman he’d fallen in love with. No, she seemed cranky and short with him but at the same time, confident, sure of herself and independent. He loved all this about her and gave her credit for never worrying before what she looked like, so why now? Maybe he’d put her up too high on a pedestal and was expecting too much. “What happens Jules, if you take off those steel toed work boots and you turn into a girl?”

“W-what?” She sputtered out the water she’d just taken a sip of. She hastily grabbed a napkin and wiped the table. “Really? Derk, I can’t believe you said that.”

“I mean it. We’re friends, you talked shit about the job and the lazy people on the dock to me. What the hell happened and don’t tell me it was because we finally had sex,” he teased. He could see his lightheartedness was paying off.

Her shoulders seemed to visually relax as her eyes widened and she covered her mouth and laughed. “Derk seriously, you turn me into one.”

He tilted his head back with a laugh. “There’s my girl.’ Then he grabbed her hand and his voice dropped to a serious tone. “Jules, I don’t want to be an over-the-road truck driver any longer. I’m prepared to give it all up, if—”

“Sorry ‘bout that.” Brie slid into her seat holding up the phone. “Chase had to switch trucks around, now your furniture is on one of ours.”

Both girls came running back over to the table and slid into their chairs.

Derk knew the conversation with Jules was over for now, but before he took Maria home in a few days, he was going to finally, tell her he loved her. He was prepared to change his entire life around to have a chance to be with her. He realized it would be for him first, but he wanted to include her as well.

“Those fish are really cool. I’ve never seen anything like them.”

He could see they were excited about the fish. “What did you think of them?”

“All of them are salt water fish, but they were so pretty.”

His daughter’s tone told him she wasn’t happy.
